Developing A Body Of Work

I haven’t really understood the concept or benefit of developing a body of work as an artist. When my teachers in art school encouraged me to continue to develop my approach to abstract painting through a body of work, I rejected the idea. I admit I don’t like to be told what to do. Several years later, I realize they were right to make the suggestion. Committing to a body of work, as in, choose a focus and paint 10 paintings about it, isn’t confining or restricting, it’s actually freeing. It prevents decision fatigue and allows the artist to get down to the business of doing what they are gifted to do, make art. Developing a body of work broadens the narrative, creates room for discovery along the way, and provides a kind of rest where creativity can grow.

I couldn’t help but relate this to being a New Venture Apprentice. As Apprentices, we are given time, space, and guidance to develop a body of work, be it a ministry or ourselves - usually both. By focusing on who God created us to be and who He’s calling us to serve, we have the freedom to explore possibilities and be creative! Instead of trying to figure out on our own wherein the Body of Christ we fit, we can rest in the assurance that we are ourselves a work of art, part of God’s grand narrative. He’s working it out for us. We simply show up to God’s canvas and do what we’re called to do, follow Him.
